It’s Good to be King
I don’t like laying concrete pavers.
I do like making money.
So why did I volunteer to do a paver job for free? And why did it feel so good?
A year ago I wrote about hating paver installation. I still do. But this felt different.
Because I did it with our neighbors. No, our friends across the street.
Without money in the mix, the work changed. Digging out a walkway base by hand and hauling crushed stone back in wasn’t exactly relaxing. But with no pressure from the ticking clock of an hourly rate, no estimate to stick to, no profit margin to meet, it was something better: a meaningful thing to do with and for people I care about.
My only request was that if anyone else on the street asks, tell them I was extremely expensive. I have no plans to become the neighborhood paver king.
